Your voice speaks to
me
like winsome whispers
echoing on the wind
on this day that would
have been your 8th birthday
remembering the sound
of your sweet voice
singing your favorite songs
while skipping rope
to the rhythm of
your own beat,
sunlight bouncing off
the red and green berets
in your hair, baby girl,
precious innocence lost
before your imagination
could make its mark
caught in the crossfire
from senseless
street corner violence
of rapid gunshots
where neighbors lived
in fear for their lives
and saw no evil,
heard no evil,
and spoke no evil
while my soul struggles
to find comfort and understanding
amongst the outrage and torment
from the pain that ripped
our family apart,
on bended knees
I pray for justice to prevail someday,
I pray for strength to continue living,
I pray for peace to love again
because I miss you
baby girl.
